Who doesn’t know The Hague? But did you know it has a beach? Well it does and this part is called Scheveningen. It is the coast side of The Hague but due to having a different name it is often not associated with the city. Even most of the Dutch will not be able to tell the correct location of Scheveningen on a map. A pity because it is a beautiful part of The Hague and just 10 minutes away from the city center.
Scheveningen is best known for two things. The Pier and the Amrâth Grand hotel Kurhaus. Both are very iconic landmarks and worth visiting even in bad weather. But let’s be honest, you want good weather to be able to enjoy the beach. And what a beach it is. Its width is stunning and combined with a boulevard full of restaurants in all types of cuisines it is one of the best places to visit during spring and summer. Besides that it is offers two casino’s, a theatre, a cinema, a harbor, a surfing school and numerous clubs. And remember we are talking about the area close to the beach, not the city center of The Hague.
The Pier has long been forgotten and not been used to its full potential for the last couple of years. Fortunately it has new owners who invested a lot and are still working on several projects to create the most popular spot along the beach area. You can already do some shopping or enjoy the view while having a drink, a snack or a full meal at one of the many food stands, restaurants or bars. You can even enjoy your drink on top of the deck while catching the last sun. Who doesn’t like that?
Herman Smith (General Manager the Pier)
The first step was to put the Pier back on the map. We had so many ideas and still have but we needed to start somewhere. Together with all the entrepreneurs of the Pier we tried to find a concept that worked for all of us. We talk to each other on a daily basis to share ideas so we can improve daily. It is a very interactive and pro-active way of working. For the near future we will add a Ferris wheel, 8 luxury suites and a flex working area. We are very excited by all of it but what we enjoy most is the fact that the Pier is back alive and both locals and tourist can come here to have a wonderful time.
When walking on top of the Pier or on the beach you can’t possibly miss it. Amrâth Grand hotel Kurhaus. One of the best known hotels in The Netherlands and it is easy to see why. The building itself is classic and grand. Both from the outside as from the inside. The grand foyer inside of the Kurhaus is open to the public. So not only hotel guests but everybody can see the magnificence of de Kurzaal.
Hanneke de Vries (Assistend General Manager Kurhaus)
The Amrâth group bought the Kurhaus 2 years ago and a lot has changed since. We invested a lot in getting the hotel back in its original form. We have performed great maintenance on the elevators and the boilers, did a lot of repainting, polished the floors, restored 60 rooms and refurnished our restaurant, waves at the Kurhaus.
Their restaurant, bar and lounge are a very pleasant place to be at. Colorful and modern. You should definitely try it out for yourself. What surprised us the most was the value for money. Good food for an even better price. So is you are walking down the boulevard and see this majestic building, walk up the stairs, enter the hotel and be stunned by the Kurzaal, have a drink in their outside lounge and enjoy the view. And to make it all even better, spend the night there. It is really luxury by the sea.

In our opinion Scheveningen has everything you need and more. Thanks to the fact it is next to the city center of The Hague it makes it easy to spend a long weekend or a short week here. It is vibrant, alive and worth visiting.

April 30, 2016, 1:05 amThe Hague is well known, but as you mention, was never aware that there was a beach. It looks like a great place to spend the evening. The Pier looks so amazing, would love to spend an evening, sipping a drink and gazing at the setting sun.

April 30, 2016, 11:02 amNice! Certainly not a place I would have thought a beach would have been in, and the pier looks great as well – good work getting some sound bites from people who work there 🙂
